Stats: Tendulkar, Dravid create world record

>> Monday, January 25, 2010

The first wicket partnership of 120 runs was the seventh century partnership for the Gambhir-Sehwag pair. They are now just three short of equalling the Indian record of most century partnerships for the opening wicket, which is held by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan.

Gautam Gambhir (68) has now scored at least a fifty in the last 11 consecutive matches. With this he equalled Viv Richards' record of scoring fifty-plus scores in most consecutive matches. Richards had done this between 1976 and 1977.

Sachin Tendulkar, on 20, completed his 22,000 runs in first-class cricket. He became second Indian to reach this landmark after Sunil Gavaskar, who aggregated 25,834 runs in 348 matches.

Sachin Tendulkar's 143 was:

his 45th hundred in Test cricket

his 26th in away Tests

his fifth against Bangladesh

his fourth in consecutive matches against Bangladesh

his second at this ground

his 72nd in first-class cricket

— Tendulkar has now aggregated 820 runs in 9 innings against Bangladesh at an astronomical average of 136.66. Among all batsmen who have played at least 5 innings against a particular opponent, Tendulkar's average is fifth best after Mohammad Yousuf (503 runs v Bangladesh @ 251.50), Don Bradman (806 runs v South Africa @ 201.50), Don Bradman (715 runs v India @ 178.75), Jimmy Adams (520 runs v India @ 173.33) and Jacques Kallis (679 runs v Zimbabwe @ 169.75).

Rahul Dravid's 111 (retired hurt) was:

his 29th hundred in Test cricket

his 17th in away Tests

his third against Bangladesh

his second at this ground

his 60th in first-class cricket

— With this Dravid equalled Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test hundreds.

Rahul Dravid provided the fifth instance of an Indian batsman getting retired hurt after scoring a century. This was the second such instance for Dravid. He had also been retired hurt at exactly 100 against West Indies at Mumbai in 2002-03.

— The 222-run partnership between Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar was the highest for any wicket at this ground. The previous highest was 175* between Dinesh Karthik and Wasim Jaffer in 2007. Interestingly that partnership also came to a halt as Karthik was retired hurt.

— The above partnership was the 15th double century partnership involving Tendulkar. He has now equalled Ricky Ponting's world record of participating in most double century partnerships, moving ahead of Don Bradman's tally of 14. Interestingly his partner Rahul Dravid is now placed at par with Bradman.

— Dravid and Tendulkar are now involved in 17 century partnerships, which is the highest tally for any pair in Test cricket. They were previously at level with West Indian pair of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes; and the Australian pair of Hayden and Ponting.

— First four Indian batsmen (Gambhir 68,Sehwag 56,Dravid 111 retd hurt and Tendulkar 143) all crossed 50. This provided the ninth such instance for India.

Murali Vijay's 52-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar was his fourth fifty-plus partnership in four innings he has batted in. He had added 98 runs in the first innings and 116 runs in the second innings of his debut Test (v Australia at Nagpur in 2008-09) and followed it up with 221 in India's only innings of Mumbai Test against Sri Lanka in December 2009.

— 390 runs were scored for the loss of 5 wickets on the second day. This is the maximum runs scored by India in a single day outside India. The previous record was of 378 runs (for the loss of 13 wickets) against England at the Oval in 1936. That performance was spread over two innings. India made 222 and were forced to follow on. They ended the day 2 at 156 for 3 - an aggregate of 378 runs in the day.
